I'm from Orem, UT, not too far from campus. I graduated from BYU with my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering in 2009. I was fortunate to have undergraduate research experience working with Dr. Fletcher on coal particle deposition on gas turbine blades. After BYU I completed a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. My research was on lithium wicking on laser-textured surfaces for application in fusion reactors. After Penn State I worked about 3.5 years in Chicago for Sargent & Lundy, an engineering services company for new and operating power plants. I worked in the Nuclear Technology and Regulations group, mainly dealing with fire protection regulations. My time there was valuable, but the opportunity to do research in the nuclear field at BYU came up and it was a perfect match. I'm currently researching the Passive Endothermic Reaction Cooling System (PERCS) with Dr. Memmott as my advisor. The goal of the PERCS is to prevent accidents similar to the one at Fukushima by providing passive cooling to the reactor core.
